People with mental illness (ODGJ-Orang Dengan Gangguan Jiwa) not only depend on medical intervention, but also need social support, especially from family. Family social support plays an important role in maintaining motivation and enthusiasm for life for ODGJ, increasing compliance with treatment, increasing ODGJ's self-confidence, and ultimately accelerating the recovery process. This study aims to determine the role of family social support for the recovery of ODGJ at Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ildrem Mental Hospital, Medan. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews with three categories of informants, namely ODGJ patients, patient family members, and health workers. Data were analyzed to identify the types of social support provided and their impact on the patient's recovery process. The study's results showed that social support provided by the family is divided into four primary forms: emotional support, information support, real support, and support for a sense of belonging. All of these forms of support have complementary roles and positively impact the recovery process for ODGJ. Among the four, emotional support is considered the most dominant because it can provide patients a sense of security, appreciation, and acceptance.
